Memento mori, a Latin phrase meaning “Remember you must die” has been a well-explored theme in art for centuries. In the 17th century, it was common to find the iconic still life paintings featuring skulls, hourglasses and flowers among other items hung up in peoples homes.

Rather than promoting a morbid message focusing on your life ending, a Memento Mori is meant to remind you that time is short so live your life to the fullest.

Drink, eat and be merry today because death could be right around the corner.

Objects in Memento Mori art reflect the brevity of Life, time passing and reminders that the body is a temporal state so live each day as if it were your last and leave behind lasting memories of a great life lived.

This piece titled Morbid Visions, was created using a plaster cast from a skull face that I carved and shaped by hand before painting and varnishing it. This artwork like many of my Grimcraft pieces uses recycled objects, discarded inner mechanisms of everyday items that are now broken and left to rot on a pile somewhere in nature’s graveyard.

The artificial flowers used in my Memento mori pieces are Reclaimed Grave flowers which are a token of remembrance for a loved one who has already passed away. They were recovered from a field in front of my local graveyard after strong winds had carried them away from the graves and they got stuck in the thick thorns of the bramble bushes.

Being made from plastic, they were also creating an environmental hazard so, I decided to both clean up the area and preserve the memories of the people they were meant for. Each piece is a unique tribute to those we have lost in life, but also to remind us that time is short and must be lived to the fullest.
